Born in Buckinghamshire, England, Tim Vaughan studied drum set with George Marsh at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music
and went on to perform with local and national acts, in jazz and blues festivals, and at rock venues including
San Francisco's Warfield Theatre, the LA Greek Theater, and the Santa Barbara Bowl. He has toured with many bands,
including the critically acclaimed Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, and he has recorded with American Music Club
and many other indie rock bands. Since 2000, he has been the lead drummer
for the renowned Green Street Marching Band.
In the 1990s, he began teaching drums and has found teaching to be the truly joy-filled part of his life. He has been drum set instructor at The Renaissance International School in Oakland since February 2010. He also taught drums at Play Music in Cupertino from 2014 to 2016. He is excited to join the team at A Drummers' Tradition in San Rafael as a Thursday afternoon drum instructor. In addition to giving private drum set lessons, he has taught group classes for the National Guitar Summer Workshop and has mentored several local high school marching band drum sections. Tim had the honor of serving as the drum coach for a unique trailer made at Abbey Road Studios in London for the 2016 Paralympic Games: "We're the Superhumans," a motivational documentary featuring Paralympic athletes and a big band consisting entirely of people with disabilities, including the talented Marin-based drummer Greg Anton. The song was "Yes, I Can!" done in the style of the Sammy Davis, Jr., big band. Greg viewed the choice of music as a fun learning opportunity and asked Tim to coach him. The resulting video, with 24 million views in its first two weeks, still inspires people around the world. Tim is featured on many recordings. He played at The Warfield Theatre with the late Dan Hicks and orchestra in a concert that was later released as a DVD. He played the song "Electric Light" on American Music Club's second album, Engine; the song was also the noted band's first music video. Tim and Kenny Aronoff are featured on the Sugar Ponies release It's A Sign. Tim is also on recordings with Benny Rietveld, Klaus Fluoride, Carmaig de Forest, Dave Scott, Sheldon Brown, Paul Robinson, Kurt Ribak, Brian Schindele, Tom Griesser, Aaron Leigh, and Bruce Kaphan. He is the associate producer and drummer on the upcoming EP by San Francisco-based band Django Mack. The Green Street Marching Band (with Tim on bass drum) is featured in a hip-hop video with Del The Funky Homosapien and Dan The Automator & Hieroglyphics on the song "Don't Hate the Player, Hate the Game." His work in numerous theatrical productions throughout the Bay Area includes the long-running Avenue Q at the New Conservatory Theatre Center as well as Ain't Misbehavin' and No, No Nanette for 42nd Street Moon. Tim continues to be the house drummer / percussionist for New Conservatory Theatre Center and will be playing in its upcoming musicals Head Over Heels (fall 2019) and Fun Home (spring 2020). |
